Fela Lives! Community Book Share

Fela Lives! Community Book Share

In this digital age of countless social networking sites and smartphones allowing us to constantly be "in touch", sometimes it can be easy to feel as if we may have lost touch with one another.

In an effort to re-connect, we present the launch of the FelaLives! library. We have chosen a few books that have inspired us and that we would like to share with you.

We intend to pass these books throughout our community in order for us all to learn, share, and grow, all while honoring the musical innovation, social consciousness, and political activism of a true revolutionary.

As this is a community library, we invite you to reflect and share your thoughts by writing directly on the books to create a collection of perspectives in the form of a community journal. We would also like to encourage you to post on the FelaLives! facebook group page in a similar manner, as well as to post your favorite Fela videos, songs, and links with us all.

So now, let us start what we have come into the room to do...

SOUL FUNKTION Radio #116 DJ Offbeat & DJC (4Deep)

Peace fam, I hope all is well in your world! DJ Offbeat lays down some heat both new and old in the first hour before handing it over to our friend DJC from the 4Deep crew in Atlanta.

The first time I played the Connect party, it was DJC and his lovely lady who picked me up from the airport and got me sorted. We spent a great afternoon at Mike Z's loft playing some records before the party that night. When I returned a few months later, DJ had just returned from Japan and was slowly killing us with his stories of Yellow and the records to be had, thus confirming what we already knew...Japan was a must for our travels in the near future. The last time I was in town, he played just before me and went DEEEP! DJC is a good friend of the SOUL FUNKTION camp and I'm not certain just why this is his first appearance on the radio show and podcast ?? Holler at him and show him some love. Maybe we can make his second appearance more timely!

J. Period & K'NAAN present The Messengers part 3 - Bob Dylan

J. Period and K'NAAN complete the triumvirate with a nod to Bob Dylan. It was the most intriguing of the three messengers that the pair chose to examine, being the furthest from their home base musically speaking. But idealogically, Dylan fits alongside Fela Kuti and Bob Marley perfectly and the mixtape knocks it out of the park. Touching on some key highlights in Dyaln's songbook without playing to the obvious, The Messengers mix tasteful hip hop beats behind energetic original bits and pair it beautifully with some spot on Dylan meditations from K'NAAN, who actually affects a folksy draw at points that may be indistinguishable from Bob's mumbly brilliance to the uninitiated.

You can feel the affection for all three artists shine through on each episode of The Messengers and all are handled with grace and intelligence. Quality work all around!

Don' think twice, it's alright. Download here

Dego DJ Set in Brooklyn

4 Hero are probably my favorite modern producers and I jump at the chance to catch either Dego or Marc Mac behind the decks. Put it in Brooklyn and make it free and it's a Saturday night I've been looking forward to for a few weeks now. Now, who's joining me?

J.Period & K'Naan present The Messengers part 2 - Bob Marley

Bob Marley gets the mixtape reworking this time around for part two of J. Period and K'Naan's The Messengers series. Another well thought out and well produced set without a doubt. A couple listens today and I am feeling the new material along with the bits of Bob's work. Maybe it's due to the shorter running time and the mixtape format allowing for a tighter punch, but I give this one the nod over 1999's Chant Down Babylon.

Their take on Bob Dylan in part three next week should make for an interesting listen!

SOUL FUNKTION Radio #114 DJ Offbeat & Alton Miller

Another two part Connect Special for this week's SOUL FUNKTION Radio show. This time around, it's Alton Miller in the spotlight. DJ Offbeat blends some of his favorite Alton Miller productions and remixes in part one, then hands it over to the man himself for the second part.

It's another deep one this week!

1. Alton Miller - Higher (Seed In The City Space edit)
2. Alton Miller & Boddhi Satva - African People ft Sa Sa Mouss
3. Alton Miller - Choose To Believe (Original)
4. Alton Miller - Together (Main Mix)
5. Alton Miller - Time On 2 (Original Mix)
6. Alton Miller ft ENID - Abstract Messages
7. Alton Miller - Play The Game
8. Alton Miller - Possibilities (Zoetic Remix)

Alton Miller - Exclusive Connect guest mix - Lovin' Music Mix

J.Period & K'NAAN present The Messengers pt 1 - Fela Kuti

I make no secret of being a bit of a Fela purist, feeling that if you can't take it to another level, then why mess with greatness. So I am naturally extremely wary of the idea of a mixtape based on Fela's songs. However, I finally gave this a listen this morning and found myself bouncing around the room.

J.Period and K'NAAN know Fela. They get it. And they bring it! Now, let us start what we have come into the room to do...
